In September 1915, Boelcke was assigned to the newly formed Jagdstaffel 2 (Jasta 2). Jasta 2 was one of the first fighter squadrons of the German Army, and it quickly became one of the most successful. Boelcke was one of the leading pilots of Jasta 2, and he quickly became known as one of the most successful fighter pilots in the war.

Boelcke developed a number of innovative aerial combat tactics. He was one of the first pilots to use a synchronized machine gun, which allowed him to fire his gun through the propeller arc. He also developed a number of new formations and tactics for fighter pilots, which helped to improve the effectiveness of the German air force.

Boelcke was killed in action on October 28, 1916. He was shot down by a British fighter pilot while leading a formation of Jasta 2 pilots on a patrol over the Western Front.
