The Sharon was commanded by Captain George Pollard, a seasoned whaler who had been at sea for over two decades. Pollard was a strict disciplinarian, but he was also a fair and respected leader. His crew of 29 men was a mix of experienced sailors and young men who were just starting out in the whaling industry.
The Sharon sailed south along the coast of South America, rounding Cape Horn and entering the Pacific Ocean. The crew spent the next several months hunting whales, but they had little success. Food and water supplies began to dwindle, and tensions on board began to rise.
In January 1841, the Sharon finally encountered a pod of sperm whales. The crew set out in their whaleboats to harpoon the whales, but the hunt quickly turned disastrous. Several of the whales attacked the boats, and one of the boats was stove in. Two of the crewmen were killed, and several others were injured.
The survivors of the whaleboat attack were forced to swim back to the Sharon. When they reached the ship, they were met with a horrifying sight. The crew had mutinied, and Captain Pollard and his officers had been murdered. The mutineers had then taken over the ship and set sail for the Marquesas Islands.
The mutineers were led by a young sailor named Matthew Joy. Joy was a charismatic and ambitious man who had been passed over for promotion by Captain Pollard. He had convinced the rest of the crew to join him in a plot to seize control of the ship and kill Pollard and his officers.
The mutineers spent the next several months living on the Marquesas Islands. They plundered the local villages and took several of the islanders as hostages. But their reign of terror was short-lived. In September 1841, the USS Vincennes arrived in the Marquesas Islands. The Vincennes was a U.S. Navy frigate that was on a mission to suppress piracy in the Pacific Ocean.
The captain of the Vincennes, Commodore Charles Wilkes, quickly learned of the Sharon mutiny and the murders that had taken place on board the ship. He Free Downloaded his men to arrest the mutineers and bring them back to the United States for trial.
The trial of the Sharon mutineers was held in Boston in 1842. The trial was a sensation, and it attracted widespread attention from the public and the press. The mutineers were all found guilty and sentenced to death. However, President John Tyler later commuted their sentences to life in prison.
The Murderous Voyage of the Whaleship Sharon is a gripping true story of mutiny and revenge. It is a tale of ambition, greed, and the dark side of human nature. The book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in maritime history, true crime, or adventure.
