Military Service

Basilone enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1940. After completing boot camp at Parris Island, he was assigned to the 1st Marine Division and deployed to the Pacific Theater of Operations. Basilone's exceptional courage and leadership skills quickly became apparent.

Battle of Guadalcanal

In the Battle of Guadalcanal, Basilone's unit was tasked with defending Henderson Field against a massive Japanese offensive. Basilone manned a machine gun and held his position against overwhelming odds. Despite being wounded multiple times, he refused to retreat and continued to fire, killing dozens of enemy soldiers. For his actions, Basilone was awarded the Navy Cross.

Battle of Iwo Jima

Basilone's heroism reached its peak during the Battle of Iwo Jima. As a platoon sergeant, he led his squad in a fierce assault on Mount Suribachi, a strategic hilltop that dominated the island. Basilone was seriously wounded in the battle and died on February 19, 1945.
