Magellan was born in 1480 in Sabrosa, Portugal. He began his career as a sailor at a young age, and he quickly rose through the ranks. In 1519, he was commissioned by the King of Spain to lead an expedition to find a westward route to the Spice Islands.

Magellan's expedition set sail from Spain in September 1519. The fleet consisted of five ships: the Trinidad, the San Antonio, the Concepción, the Victoria, and the Santiago. Magellan was in command of the Trinidad.

The expedition sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and then down the coast of South America. In October 1520, they entered the Strait of Magellan, a narrow passage between the mainland of South America and Tierra del Fuego. The strait was treacherous, and the expedition lost one ship, the Santiago.

After passing through the Strait of Magellan, the expedition sailed across the Pacific Ocean. They reached the Philippines in March 1521. Magellan was killed in a battle with the natives on the island of Mactan in April 1521.

Despite Magellan's death, the expedition continued on. The Victoria, under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, completed the circumnavigation of the globe in September 1522. The Victoria was the only ship to return to Spain, and only 18 of the original crew of 237 survived the journey.

Magellan's expedition was a major milestone in human history. It proved that the world was round, and it opened up new trade routes between Europe and Asia. Magellan's voyage also had a profound impact on the development of science and geography.

Magellan's Legacy

Ferdinand Magellan is remembered as one of the greatest explorers in history. His voyage changed the course of history, and his legacy continues to inspire people today.

Magellan's legacy is reflected in the many places that are named after him. The Strait of Magellan, the Magellan Islands, and the Magellan Nebula are all named in his honor. There are also many statues and monuments to Magellan around the world.

Magellan's voyage is still studied by historians and explorers today. His journey was a testament to the human spirit of adventure and discovery, and it continues to inspire people to explore the world around them.
