John McPhee's Levels of the Game is a classic work of sportswriting that explores the hidden world of baseball. From the major leagues to the sandlots, McPhee follows the game's players, coaches, and fans, revealing the beauty and complexity of the sport.

The Major Leagues

McPhee begins his journey in the major leagues, where he profiles some of the game's biggest stars, including Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, and Mickey Mantle. He also takes a behind-the-scenes look at the business of baseball, from the owners and general managers to the agents and scouts.

McPhee's writing is insightful and engaging, and he paints a vivid picture of the major leagues. He captures the excitement of the game, the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat. He also explores the challenges that players face, both on and off the field.

The Minor Leagues

After the major leagues, McPhee turns his attention to the minor leagues. He follows a group of young players as they make their way through the system, from the low minors to the Triple-A level. He also profiles some of the veteran players who are trying to keep their careers alive.

The minor leagues are a world away from the major leagues, but McPhee finds just as much beauty and complexity in this level of the game. He writes about the players' dreams and aspirations, their struggles and sacrifices. He also explores the role that the minor leagues play in the development of future major league stars.

The Sandlots

Finally, McPhee takes us to the sandlots, where baseball is played for the pure love of the game. He writes about the kids who play on these fields, the parents who coach them, and the community that comes together to support them.

The sandlots are where baseball begins, and McPhee captures the magic of the game at this level. He writes about the joy of playing the game, the camaraderie of the players, and the lifelong memories that are made on these fields.

Levels of the Game is a must-read for any baseball fan. It is a beautifully written and insightful look at the hidden world of the sport. McPhee captures the essence of baseball, from the major leagues to the sandlots, and he reveals the beauty and complexity of the game that we all love.

If you are a fan of baseball, or if you are simply looking for a great read, I highly recommend Levels of the Game.
