Early Life and Career

Hemingway had three older sisters and a younger brother. His father's family was wealthy, but his mother's family was much less well-off. Hemingway's parents were both strict disciplinarians, and he often clashed with his father.

Hemingway began writing at a young age. He published his first short story in a high school magazine. After graduating from high school, Hemingway worked as a reporter for a local newspaper. In 1918, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Italy during World War I. Hemingway was wounded in combat, and he was awarded the Silver Star for his bravery.

After the war, Hemingway returned to the United States and worked as a journalist in Chicago. In 1921, he published his first novel, The Sun Also Rises. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and it established Hemingway as one of the most important writers of his generation.

The 1920s and 1930s

In the 1920s, Hemingway lived in Paris, where he was part of the expatriate community. He became friends with other writers, such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein. Hemingway also traveled extensively during this time, visiting Spain, Italy, and Africa. In 1926, he published The Sun Also Rises, which is considered one of his greatest novels.

In the 1930s, Hemingway returned to the United States. He published several more novels, including A Farewell to Arms (1929),Death in the Afternoon (1932),and To Have and Have Not (1937). Hemingway also covered the Spanish Civil War as a journalist. His experiences in Spain inspired his novel For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940).

The 1940s and 1950s

During World War II, Hemingway served as a war correspondent. He covered the D-Day landings and the liberation of Paris. After the war, Hemingway returned to Cuba, where he lived until his death in 1961. Hemingway published several more novels in the 1940s and 1950s, including Across the River and Into the Trees (1950),The Old Man and the Sea (1952),and A Moveable Feast (1964).

Hemingway's writing style is characterized by its simplicity, brevity, and realism. He often used short sentences and simple language. He also avoided using adverbs and adjectives.
