Boyden was born in 1868 in the small town of Deerfield, Massachusetts. He graduated from Amherst College in 1890 and then taught at several preparatory schools before being appointed headmaster of Deerfield in 1902.

Boyden immediately set about making changes at Deerfield. He raised the academic standards, increased the size of the faculty, and expanded the school's physical plant. He also introduced a number of innovative programs, such as the Deerfield Academy Summer School and the Deerfield Academy Scholarship Program.

Boyden's leadership was instrumental in Deerfield's rise to prominence. The school's enrollment grew from 65 students in 1902 to over 600 students in 1968. Deerfield also became known for its rigorous academic program, its strong athletic teams, and its commitment to community service.

Boyden retired as headmaster of Deerfield in 1968. He died in 1972 at the age of 104. He is remembered as one of the most influential educators of the 20th century.
