Early life and career
Roderick Haig Brown was born in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1888. He grew up in a wealthy family, and he attended private schools in England and Canada. After graduating from Oxford University, Brown returned to Canada and began working as a journalist.
In 1914, Brown enlisted in the Canadian army and served in World War I. He was wounded in action, and he was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery.
