What happened in the last 31 hours of Martin Luther King Jr.'s life?

On April 3, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. arrived in Memphis, Tennessee, to support a strike by sanitation workers. He gave a speech that night at Mason Temple, in which he said, "I've been to the mountaintop... I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land."

The next day, King led a march of sanitation workers through the streets of Memphis. The march was peaceful, but it was met with violence by the Memphis police. King was struck in the head with a rock and had to be taken to the hospital.

King was released from the hospital later that day, and he returned to his hotel room at the Lorraine Motel. He spent the evening working on his speech for the next day's rally.

On April 4, 1968, King gave his final speech at the Mason Temple. He spoke about the importance of nonviolence and the need for racial equality. He ended his speech with the words, "We shall overcome."

Later that afternoon, King was assassinated as he stood on the balcony of his hotel room. He was shot by James Earl Ray, a white supremacist.
