In the Country of Women: A Memoir
In the Country of Women is a memoir by Susan Straight, a white woman who grew up in a small town in California with a Mexican-American family. The book explores the themes of race, class, and gender, and how they shaped Straight's life and experiences.
Straight was born in Riverside, California, in 1960. Her father was a white man who worked as a teacher and her mother was a Mexican-American woman who worked as a nurse. Straight's parents divorced when she was young, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, a Mexican-American man.
Straight grew up in a predominantly Mexican-American neighborhood, and she was often the only white child in her classes. She experienced racism from both white and Mexican-American people, and she struggled to find her place in both cultures.
