Early Life and Career
Jim Mancuso was born in Eveleth, Minnesota, in 1934. He grew up playing hockey and dreamed of one day playing in the NHL.
After graduating from high school, Mancuso played for the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He was a standout player and helped lead the Bulldogs to two NCAA championships.
In 1958, Mancuso signed a contract with the Boston Bruins. He played in the NHL for two seasons before being traded to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Mancuso played for the Blackhawks for five seasons before being claimed by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1967 expansion draft. He played one season for the Kings before retiring from the NHL.
Coaching Career
After retiring from the NHL, Mancuso began his coaching career. He coached in the minor leagues for several years before being hired as the head coach of the Charlotte Checkers in 1977.
Mancuso led the Checkers to two Southern Hockey League championships in 1980 and 1981. He was also named the SHL Coach of the Year in both of those seasons.
In 1982, Mancuso was hired as the general manager of the Checkers. He held that position for over two decades and helped build the team into one of the most successful in the ECHL.
Mancuso retired from the Checkers in 2004. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.
