Scotty Bowman is widely regarded as the greatest hockey coach of all time. Over the course of his illustrious career, he won nine Stanley Cups with four different teams, more than any other coach in NHL history. Bowman's teams were known for their discipline, teamwork, and relentless pursuit of excellence. He was a master motivator and tactician, and his players consistently rose to the occasion under his leadership.
In his new book, The Inside Story of Hockey Mastermind, acclaimed sportswriter Ken Dryden provides an intimate look at Bowman's life and career. Through exclusive interviews with Bowman, his players, and other key figures in the hockey world, Dryden paints a vivid portrait of a true hockey mastermind.
Early Life and Playing Career
Scotty Bowman was born in Verdun, Quebec, in 1933. He grew up playing hockey on the frozen streets and ponds of his hometown. Bowman was a gifted player, and he quickly rose through the ranks of minor hockey. In 1951, he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens, one of the most storied franchises in NHL history.
Bowman played for the Canadiens for three seasons, but he never cracked the team's star-studded lineup. In 1955, he was traded to the New York Rangers, where he played for two more seasons before retiring from playing.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Bowman began his coaching career in the minor leagues. He quickly established himself as a rising star, and in 1967, he was hired as the head coach of the St. Louis Blues. Bowman led the Blues to the playoffs in his first season, and he quickly became known for his innovative coaching style.
In 1971, Bowman was hired as the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens were one of the most dominant teams in the NHL at the time, and Bowman's arrival only made them stronger. Under Bowman's leadership, the Canadiens won four Stanley Cups in five years. He also helped develop some of the greatest players in NHL history, including Guy Lafleur, Steve Shutt, and Ken Dryden.
Detroit Red Wings
In 1980, Bowman left the Canadiens to become the head coach of the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings were a struggling team at the time, but Bowman quickly turned them into a contender. Under his leadership, the Red Wings won three Stanley Cups in six years. Bowman also helped develop some of the greatest players in Red Wings history, including Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov, and Nicklas Lidstrom.
Return to the Canadiens
In 1993, Bowman returned to the Montreal Canadiens as the team's general manager. He held that position for five years, and he helped the Canadiens win another Stanley Cup in 1993. Bowman retired from hockey in 2002, but he remains one of the most respected and influential figures in the game.
