A Life of Darkness and Silence

Helen Keller was born in 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. At the age of 19 months, she contracted scarlet fever, which left her deaf and blind. This devastating blow would forever change the course of her life.

Growing up, Keller faced immense challenges. She was unable to communicate with her family or the outside world, and she struggled to develop her cognitive abilities. However, her intelligence and determination shone through.

Anne Sullivan: A Guiding Light

In 1886, Keller met Anne Sullivan, a young teacher from the Perkins School for the Blind. Sullivan became Keller's lifelong companion and mentor. Using the newly developed method of finger spelling, Sullivan taught Keller how to read, write, and communicate with the world.

Sullivan's arrival marked a turning point in Keller's life. She embraced education with a passion, and her thirst for knowledge knew no bounds. Keller went on to attend Radcliffe College, where she graduated with honors in 1904.

Advocacy and Inspiration
