Joanna Macy is an internationally renowned environmental activist, scholar, and author whose work has had a profound impact on the fields of deep ecology, ecopsychology, and systems thinking. Her teachings have inspired countless individuals and communities worldwide to embrace the interconnectedness of all life and to work for a more just and sustainable future.

Joanna Macy was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1929. She grew up in a secular Jewish family and developed a strong sense of social justice from an early age. After graduating from Swarthmore College in 1952, she worked as a social worker in low-income communities.

In the 1960s, Macy became involved in the civil rights and anti-war movements. She was deeply affected by the suffering she witnessed during this time and began to explore spiritual practices as a way to cope. In 1965, she met the Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who became her spiritual mentor.

In the late 1960s, Macy's focus shifted to environmental issues. She was one of the founders of the Council on Economic Priorities, a research organization that exposed the environmental and social impacts of corporations. She also worked with the Sierra Club and other environmental groups to raise awareness about the dangers of nuclear power and deforestation.

In 1978, Macy co-authored the book "Despair and Personal Power in the Nuclear Age" with John Seed. This book became a classic in the field of environmental activism and helped to inspire a new generation of activists.

Macy's work is rooted in the principles of deep ecology, which emphasizes the intrinsic value of all living beings and the interconnectedness of all life. She also draws on the insights of ecopsychology, which explores the relationship between human psychology and the natural world.

Macy believes that the environmental crisis is ultimately a spiritual crisis. She argues that our culture's dominant worldview, which emphasizes individualism, materialism, and domination over nature, is unsustainable and ultimately destructive.

Macy refers to the work of our time as the work of healing the separation between humans and the natural world. She believes that this work requires a profound transformation of our consciousness and values.

Macy offers a variety of tools and practices to help people engage in this work. These include:

  • Gratitude: Macy encourages people to cultivate a sense of gratitude for the beauty and abundance of the natural world.
  • Compassion: She teaches the importance of developing compassion for all living beings, including ourselves.
  • Deep listening: Macy emphasizes the importance of deep listening to the voices of the Earth and to the wisdom of our own hearts.
  • Systems thinking: She encourages people to understand the complex interconnectedness of the natural world and human society.
  • Active hope: Macy believes that hope is an essential ingredient for transformative change. She encourages people to cultivate a sense of hope that is based on a deep understanding of the challenges we face and a belief in our own ability to make a difference.

Joanna Macy is a visionary thinker and a compassionate guide for the work of our time. Her teachings have inspired countless individuals and communities worldwide to embrace the interconnectedness of all life and to work for a more just and sustainable future.

As the environmental crisis deepens, Macy's work is more relevant than ever. She offers us a path forward, a way to heal the separation between humans and the natural world and to create a more sustainable and just future for all.
